Developing interdisciplinary leaders in environmental problem-solving

Environmental issues encompass a wide range of phenomena and require equally broad foundational knowledge. Understanding problems and identifying solutions demand not only extensive basic expertise but also collaborative, multidisciplinary technological approaches across various fields.

In response to these educational and societal needs, the Division of Environmental Science & Engineering at POSTECH operates a graduate program built on interdisciplinary collaboration among six departments—Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Through this system, we cultivate both specialized expertise and integrative competencies across science and engineering, enabling students to effectively address complex environmental technology challenges.

The primary educational objective of our division is to train highly skilled researchers in advanced environmental fields. Environmental specialists must possess both a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues and the ability to conduct advanced, independent research. Because environmental problems span a wide range of disciplines, establishing an efficient and systematic educational framework is essential.

Leveraging the strengths of an engineering-focused institution, the division emphasizes environmental technology and engineering research rather than policy or assessment studies. In close collaboration with industry, we pursue practical research outcomes while designing our graduate curriculum—such as the integrated MS/PhD program—to connect education with real-world applications and research activities.
