Environmental Internship Program

Environmental Engineering Internship Program Guide

The Division of Environmental Science & Engineering at POSTECH offers a 4-week internship program during the vacation period for 3rd- and 4th-year undergraduate science and engineering students who are interested in the environmental field. Participants can experience advanced scientific research firsthand in a laboratory of their choice under the guidance of faculty members, gaining early exposure to graduate-level research and helping them establish future research goals.

Among applicants from universities nationwide, approximately 20–30 students are selected each year. During the 4-week program, interns work in the POSTECH Environmental Engineering laboratories they applied for, receiving direct guidance from faculty, post-docs, and graduate students.

Participants will also have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art research equipment, join lab meetings, lab MTs, and seminars, gaining experience similar to graduate school life.
In addition, interns receive a scholarship and free dormitory housing during the program and participate in Open Lab events, special lectures, and visits to facilities such as the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and POSCO.

Purpose
  • To provide undergraduate students with research experience, spark interest in research, and help them explore graduate school life, thereby assisting in their academic and career decisions.
Program Period
  • During the vacation period: 4 weeks (each year in July–August / January–February)
Eligibility
  • Junior or senior students enrolled in a 4-year science or engineering program at domestic or international universities.
Application & Selection Process
March–May / September–November
  • Announcement & Promotion of Internship Program
    • Online notices, posters, on-site presentations
May / November
  • Application deadline: submission via E-mail
  • Final selection announced on website and via individual E-mail
July / January
  • Research participation: 4 weeks during vacation
Required Documents
  • Application form
  • Personal statement / research plan
  • Official undergraduate transcript
Selection Method
  • Applicants designate 1st and 2nd preferred faculty advisors
  • Evaluation by each professor (grades, personal statement / research plan)
  • Each professor selects about 2–3 students
(Depending on eligibility, labs may choose not to select or may select additional students)
  • The choice of preferred research lab and advisor is the most important part of the program. Applicants should thoroughly review whether their desired professor participates in the program and check the professor’s research areas and lab homepage to ensure alignment with their research interests.

An active approach is to contact the professor or lab members via email to learn more details in advance.

Research Activities & Completion Requirements

This internship is not a simple lab tour or assistant role. Interns are assigned one research project and experience real graduate-level research under faculty supervision.

This helps students determine whether research suits their aptitude and assists greatly in future career planning.

The following research activities are provided:

  • Participation in lab meetings and seminars
  • Participation in Environmental Engineering Open Lab
  • Visits to the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and POSCO
Completion Requirements
  • Sincere participation in research for 4 weeks
  • Submission of reflection report and research results report
Benefits
  • Internship scholarship: 500,000 KRW (after tax)
  • Accident insurance during internship period
  • Dormitory accommodation provided
  • Internship completion certificate (Korean & English)
